With out bellies fat and happy, we headed to the National Civil Rights museum. It's located at the hotel where Martin Luther King Jr was assassinated, you can see into the room where he stayed and even see the room in a building across the street where his killer stood. The tour was absolutely amazing. It's sobering to be reminded that so many of those injustices happened relatively recently, and that such ignorance was bred over so many years. I thought the museum did a nice job of honoring the individuals involved in the movement as well as encouraging people to focus on human rights in general. I'm glad we stopped here, it's definitely a worthwhile experience.
After the museum I wanted to go to the Mud Island River Park, on the Mississippi River, but SOMEONE thought we should go to the Rock and Soul Museum first to make sure we had enough time to check it out. This museum was pretty cool, they have a good audio tour about the rich musical history of Memphis. After spending time at the civil rights museum, it was pretty interesting to hear about black and white musicians collaborating at the same time that racially motivated attacks and riots of the civil rights movement were happening.
We headed to the park afterwards to catch the monorail onto the island but it was already CLOSED. Does this sound familiar to anyone? Little bro is seriously going to get throttled if he keeps me from another activity I want to do. It was a good day in Memphis though. It's a lively and colorful city with a pretty happening downtown. And, who doesn't love a city that smells like barbecue?!
We followed a beautiful sunset west to Little Rock, Arkansas and had dinner at the Buffalo Grill, a suggestion from my favorite Little Rocker, Trey. Now we're just watching the opening ceremony of the Olympics...something I really get excited about. I usually get sucked into those "achievement in the face of adversity" stories so I'll be rooting for all of the underdogs as usual.
Road Trip by the Numbers:
Miles Travelled: 958
States seen in the license plate game: 40 (in 2 days! Big surprise of the day- Alaska)
Glasses of sweet tea: 3
Number of days by which we just missed Elvis Week in Memphis: 1 (darn it!)
Ok time for some zzz's! Thanks for checking in :)
